Audience Profile

I intend to aim my magazine at 16-24 year old males and females. Despite the Hip-Hop/R&B genre of music being mainly associated with black male rappers, I feel this is inaccurate as there are many inspirational female artists of this style and it is therefore necessary to include them into my target audience. The mag will share latest trending items( including fashion, brands, music, films and technology as this would be suited to the target age group being subjected to the high-tech nature of this generation.) Also interviews with Hip-Hop artists to enhance knowledge etc. There will be one issue published and released every 3 weeks at the price of £2.99 and sold in most of the popular stores which are used day-to-day for convenience. The magazine will contain 70-90 pages; this is dependant on the events from week to week as some issues will be released at the time of popular festivals or awards evenings etc. where people will want information regarding these events.

I have produced examples of the type of people my magazine will be typically attracted to and enjoyed by. (Although I am to interest a broad population, including those who wouldn't usually read this type of magazine with a Hip-Hop genre.) My use of quirky, exciting and humorous images would hopefully intrigue many and appeal.

Audience Research

I conducted my research using uktribes.co.uk
When on the site, I searched 'hip-hop' as this is my preferred style of music.
Following the search I gained results relevant to this genre.

Target Audience research

After researching 'Clash' magazine, I found out their target audience is 18-35 year olds. It also attracts audiences with an interest in film and fashion.

i-D magazine has the intended target audience of people aged 15-24. Dedicated to music, youth culture and fashion.

I have concluded from my research that i want to aim my magazine at those between 16-24 and both male and female. People who listen to Hip-Hop music tend to listen to radio and TV stations such as MTV Base and Radio 1 as these stations play a lot of hip-hop sounds. My target audience of a hip-hop mag would usually purchase branded items of clothing and have an interest in the latest trends and brands which are popular. This audience would most likely have a part time/full time job and would have a reliable source of income, this would enable me to price my magazine at around a healthy £3.99. This is a fair price and would be reasonable for the target audience if they are being provided with information of interest to them. Despite XXL having a slightly higher price of £5.

MOODBOARD

Relevant fashion/ styling

I love Iggy Azalea's style, it is unique and her expressions and outfits reflect attitude. She is suited to hip-hop through both her music and styling as she wears the classic gold chains, baggy jackets and skin tight, short dresses. I particularly like the gold jewellery and blonde hair to portray a trashy image despite being incredibly talented and loved by many. Her revealing clothes give off this impression and would be relevant for Bass Junkie as it is a Hip Hop mag with 'inappropriate' content.

A snapback would be a suitable garment as this creates a more informal, urban image which relates to hip-hop music. The images above display girls wearing the snapback backwards, I like this idea. I also like the look of the long hair on the women as it suits the snapback and complements the outfit. The girls appear chilled out with no stress, this is the impression I wish to give through my images for Bass Junkie. Brands such as 'Obey' would be relevant as they are down the mainstream root which is often taken by those with a love for hip-hop; the popular brands suggest quality and the desire to keep up-to-date. The 'chav' image is portrayed to those subjected to these images as the snapback, strong colours and tight clothing conforms to this stereotype.

The simple, white t-shirt contrasts with the colour of his skin and looks fresh. I aim for this 'fresh' and 'crisp' style of clothing in my images as I feel this appears more professional and stylish. The male above expresses a careless attitude in the image by the inappropriate hand gestures which may be offensive to some- this  is included in the content I aim to put inside issues of Bass Junkie to appeal to the target audience effectively. He also has a humorous expression on his face-I like this idea.

Basic colours.

Baggy trousers/'pants' are suited to my genre of hip-hop music as they reflect a careless attitude. Often, Jay Z and other well known hip-hop artists are seen wearing these. I feel baggy trousers would be more suited to a male model. It expresses a sense of freedom and personality which would create mood for the audience.

Black and white is often used for the styling of artists of the hip hop genre. This does not give much away and therefore creates a sense of mystery for the audience which may appeal to them and intrigue them to develop further knowledge. The black and white clothing and/or filter on images creates an urban, rough feel which is relevant for hip hop styling.

A crop top would be a relevant item of clothing for a female model featured inside Bass Junkie as it would be suited for the sexual/inappropriate content side of the mag as well as appealing to males through the male gaze theory and creating an urban feel. I feel a cropped tee would express and reflect attitude and interest the reader. It suggests an informal style also which is intended with Bass Junkie.

Title of the Magazine

After analysing the names of other, successful music magazines, I have decided on my magazine name.
I decided to research 4 titles:
Verse
Replay
Echo
Base Junkie

Verse definition- writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme
Replay definition- play back (a recording on tape, video, or film)
Echo-
a sound or sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener.

Base Junkie- low pitch family of instruments. An addict.
My favourite out of the titles above are Replay and Base Junkie.
For a person to replay a song, they have the desire to hear it again. This suits the nature of a magazine as it suggests somebody would have the desire to want to read it again as they enjoyed it. I feel this simple name would be easy to remember and suited to a hip-hop theme. It sounds urban and could be edgy with the right images and model alongside. This does not suggest a specific genre of music and therefore is diverse.

Base Junkie implies that someone would get addicted to my magazine; it sounds edgy and is brave to use a name with such a bad association as it is mainly used when concerning drugs. The 'Bass' part of the name refers to the musical content of the magazine and it therefore suited. I feel I could do a lot with the text for this name to suit the hip-hop intended nature of the mag. This is diverse and funky.

After research, I decided to name the magazine Base Junkie.

Analysising existing magazine titles

The definition mean to be stunned, usually by a shock-something out of the ordinary.
'Confused'-unable to think with clarity or act with understanding or intelligence. These definitions suit the nature of the magazine and create an overall view as content (including images etc.) have the ability to shock/stun the reader- this would allow the reader's to develop an interest. 'confused' may have been incorporated into the name as it implies that after reading the honest, informative content and exposing images (usually), the reader will be left with something to reflect on.

This is to collide with loud, harsh noise.
This is representative of the magazine as it contains music related content and therefore is associated with sounds/noise. It is short and snappy with a nice edge as it is vague, it keeps the readers guessing of the contents which would persuade them to pick up a copy! The name does not suggest a specific genre and therefore gives the impression that there is diversity within the magazine.

To transmit or give out a feeling or atmosphere and enjoying oneself when listening to popular music or dancing. This is a relevant name as it has reference to music and as this is the style of magazine, it fits in. Vibe consists of Hip-hop and R&B music which is popular and loved by many. 'Vibe' creates and excited mood for the reader and suggests the mag will provide entertainment through its content. It is edgy and youthful.

Immortal or wicked behavior. This has reference to wrong doing, impurity and badness. This is suited to the content of Vice magazine as it features inappropriate behavior, sexual reference, bad language and the images featured are often also exposing and unusual. This may appeal to the target audience as the 'different' images and content are not always accepted in society.
